KENNESAW, GA – A big crowd was on hand Friday night as the KSU Men’s Lacrosse team defeated Tennessee Wesleyan College. The back and forth game eventually ended with an 11-10 win for the Owls, who locked up the SELC Southwest Division title with the victory.
The game was an even battle throughout as neither team managed to get further ahead than two goals at any point in the contest. Offensively, the Owls dominated time of possession and won the groundball battle; however, the Bulldog offense countered with multiple close shots off of picks on the crease.
Freshman Tyler Mathews had another great game for the Owls as he scored 4 goals for the second consecutive game. After not scoring in the first five games of the season, Mathews has come on strong as of late, scoring 10 in the last four games.
The night would prove to be most memorable for the seniors playing their last game at the Owls Nest. Midfielder Andrew Congleton had 3 points on the night, defenseman Rory Keown had multiple take away checks, and senior goalie Andrew Flood had 20 saves, including a 1 on 1 stop with less than 10 seconds left to preserve the win.
The Owls have two weeks off before heading up to Johns Creek for the SELC playoffs. A first round matchup with #8 SCAD awaits the Owls who were knocked out of the tournament last season by the Bees. A trip to the national tournament is on the line as the winner of the conference tournament is awarded the automatic bid. This is the Owls’ third straight conference tournament appearance.
