Kennesaw State University | L 3 - 13 |
Game ReviewA big home crowd was on hand for the home tilt against the University of Georgia on Sunday. The Owls looked to close out their Division I schedule undefeated after beating Georgia Tech the previous week, but that would prove to be a harder task than anticipated. The Bulldogs scored early and never looked back, cruising to a 13-3 victory over KSU. The Owls looked flat from the beginning and were completely overwhelmed by the Dogs at both ends of the field. Turnovers and penalties plagued the Owls on this day and prevented Kennesaw from ever making a legitimate come back. Coach Grizanti believes there is a lot to take from this game, noting "hopefully our heads will come back down to size after this outcome." The Owls finished their MCLA D I schedule at 1-1 after splitting their meetings with the two in-state schools. Kennesaw will start their out of conference MCLA D II schedule on February 18th, against the #25 ranked Washington-St. Louis Bears, home at the Owls Nest. Photos

Game ReviewKennesaw State picked up another victory over the weekend beating GRLC opponent #25 Washington-St. Louis 10-7 on Saturday night at the KSU Owl’s Nest. The rain damped the evening but the game was played undeterred. Kennesaw took the lead within the first five minutes and never gave it up. After falling behind 3-1, St. Louis played Kennesaw to a virtual stalemate. The Owl’s might not have pulled away, but never really seemed to be in danger of losing the lead either as the Owls controlled possession and the transition game. The KSU ride was especially successful as the Bears struggled all night to transition to the offensive end of the field. Senior Andrew Congleton had 5 points on the night, including 3 goals as the senior took advantage of a significant speed advantage at the midfield position. St. Louis came in after handling fellow SELC member Emory 20-7 earlier in the day in Atlanta. Kennesaw hopes to carry some momentum from this game into their game against #3 Dayton at home in two weeks. The Owls play five straight games against MCLA DII ranked teams before conference play begins in April. GAME RECAP

Game ReviewThe #3 ranked Dayton Flyers came to Kennesaw over the weekend and made themselves quite comfortable on the Owl’s Nest turf defeating the home Owl’s 19-6. Dayton took control early and dominated an Owls team that played timid and uninspired. The Owls defense couldn’t stop the high powered Dayton offense and failed to create any sort of rhythm on offense. The loss is the worst suffered by a KSU Owls team in over three seasons. Kennesaw State University | L 3 - 11 |
Game ReviewThe Owls finished their home series against the CCLA with a Sunday tilt against #18 Indiana Tech. After a deflating loss to Dayton, Kennesaw came out more disciplined and played much better than they had the day before. The final score, 11-3, doesn't capture the change in energy on the KSU sidelines. Like Dayton the day before, Indiana Tech took advantage of a conservative defensive strategy by the home team and controlled possession for most of the game. The Owls played without many players who were held out due to injuries. As a result, KSU looked inexperienced on the field, committing too many turnovers while making bad decisions. The Owls have two weeks off before heading to St. Louis to take on two more out of conference teams at the Missouri Baptist Invitational. Photos

Game ReviewThe Owls hit the road over the weekend, heading to St. Louis, Missouri to take on #22 Missouri State University and #11 North Dakota State University. The Owls came into the weekend ranked #23 in the MCLA poll and in need of a big win to bolster their resume for the MCLA tournament. The Owls took on the Bears from the GRLC on Saturday in a game televised on laxxtv.com and they took advantage, winning 12-9. After a long bus ride, the team came out strong and played with a sense of urgency not seen since the Georgia Tech game at the beginning of the season. The Owls led the entire game and had multiple highlight reel goals, including a falling, one handed, no angle shot by freshman Justin Cruz, which drew a huge reaction from the crowd. The fightin’ grizantis from Kennesaw dominated on groundballs and controlled possession. Sophomore transfer Alex Gavilla lost only two face offs on the day, asserting his dominance on the faceoff X. Defensively, the Owls played as a unit; sliding on time, breaking up passes, and clearing the ball with ease. Defenseman Kyle Teasdale had multiple individual clears that proved to be huge for the Owls. Goalie Andrew Flood played a great game in pipes, contributing to the offense with two assists for Kennesaw to go along with 9 saves. The Owls are now 2-0 against Missouri State in program history, having beaten them 12-8 in 2010. This year, the Owls are 2-2 vs. teams ranked in the MCLA top 25. Game ReviewKennesaw State won a dog fight over the weekend, beating the 11th ranked Bison from North Dakota State 6-4 at Grayson High School in St. Louis, Missouri on Sunday. The Bison came into the game riding high after defeating the #1 ranked team in the country, Davenport University, earlier in the day. But the Bison did not have an answer for the Owls defense and struggled all afternoon. As a result, NDSU becomes the highest ranked out of conference opponent that Kennesaw has defeated in program history. The Owls led 1-0 at the end of the first half as both goalies played on their heads and made some great plays. The Owls came out in the second half and continued playing the way they did in the first, holding NDSU off the scoreboard until the one minute mark of the third quarter. The Owls played consistent throughout, dominating transition and frustrating the Bison in special teams. After opening a three goal lead in the fourth quarter, Kennesaw relinquished a two goal run by the Bison closing the gap to one, but the Owls responded with two goals of their own to put away the game. The defensive trio of Tom Mudrak, Cole McMeen, and Rory Keown held the Bison attack to two points, including limiting NDSU All-American Peter Flock scoreless. The Owls finished the road trip 2-0 and picked up huge victories over ranked team in nationally televised games. The Owls now turn their attention to SELC play. They begin their conference schedule on the road at Reinhardt on April 1st, and play at home again on April 6th, when the Owls host the Emory University Eagles. This game was broadcasted on the internet by Laxx TV. If you missed the action, check out the video of the game on Laxx.TV or in HD on YouTube. GAME RECAP

Reinhardt University | W 10 - 7 |
Game ReviewThe Kennesaw State Owls finished their road schedule on Sunday, defeating the Reinhardt University Eagles, 10-7 on their home field. After taking a 6-1 lead into half, the Owls gave up a slew of bad goals, as the team looked flat and sloppy throughout. One bright spot for KSU came from senior captain Andrew Congleton, who had six points on the day (4G 2A). After the game, Coach Alex Calvin made it known that the result was not acceptable for the team as turnovers and penalties plagued the Owls all afternoon. It was clear from the beginning that the team’s attitude and effort was not up to par with that of the host Eagles. The Owls struggled in the second half, failing to score in the third quarter as the Reinhardt defense played solid position defense to limit the dodging opportunities from the KSU midfield. Two quick goals for the Owls midway through the fourth quarter put the game out of reach as Congleton had a lefty rip followed by a fast break goal by Cody Clark off the following face-off. Defensively, the Owls played uninspired lacrosse and were caught ball watching on more than one occasion. Canadian Kyle Teasdale stood out at pole for the Owls, clearing the ball multiple times for the team and breaking up a copious amount of passes by the Reinhardt offense. The Owls return home to face SELC rival Emory University on Friday night; a win would clinch a spot in the SELC Tournament in Johns Creek, GA. GAME RECAP

Kennesaw State University | W 20 - 5 |
Game ReviewThe KSU lacrosse team picked up their fourth consecutive victory on Friday night, defeating Emory University 20-5. With the win, Kennesaw locked up a spot in the SELC Tournament in Johns Creek on April 27th. The win also promotes next week's game with TWC into the Southwestern Division Regular Season Championship Game. The offensive barrage started early for the Owls Friday night, scoring 7 times in the 1st quarter and 6 more in the 2nd quarter. On the other side of the field, the defense held Emory to 3 goals in the 1st half, easily securing the victory by half time. The offense continued to pour it on in the second half as multiple players stepped up off the bench to put in more buckets for the Owls. In all, 11 players scored for the Owls on the night, including 4 goals from Tyler Mathews and 3 more from Andrew Congleton. The game was also the first time the team reached the 20 goal mark this season. In net, Andrew Flood saved 80% of his shots before being relieved of his duties by Derek Stinson in the third quarter. Next Friday, the Kennesaw State Owls will host Tennessee Wesleyan College with the Southwest Division Championship on the line. Both teams come into the game at 2-0 in division play with the winner clinching the division and a number one seed in the 2012 SELC Conference Tournament. GAME RECAP

Game ReviewA big crowd was on hand Friday night as the KSU men’s lacrosse team defeated Tennessee Wesleyan College. The back and forth game eventually ended with an 11-10 win for the Owls, who locked up the SELC Southwest Division title with the victory. The game was an even battle throughout as neither team managed to get further ahead than two goals at any point in the contest. Offensively, the Owls dominated time of possession and won the groundball battle; however, the Bulldog offense countered with multiple close shots off of picks on the crease. Freshman Tyler Mathews had another great game for the Owls as he scored 4 goals for the second consecutive game. After not scoring in the first five games of the season, Mathews has come on strong as of late, scoring 10 in the last four games. The night would prove to be most memorable for the seniors playing their last game at the Owls Nest. Midfielder Andrew Congleton had 3 points on the night, defenseman Rory Keown had multiple take away checks, and senior goalie Andrew Flood had 20 saves, including a 1 on 1 stop with less than 10 seconds left to preserve the win. The Owls have two weeks off before heading up to Johns Creek for the SELC playoffs. A first round matchup with #8 SCAD awaits the Owls who were knocked out of the tournament last season by the Bees. A trip to the national tournament is on the line as the winner of the conference tournament is awarded the automatic bid. This is the Owls’ third straight conference tournament appearance. Alpharetta High School | W 13 - 8 |
Game ReviewAlpharetta, GA – Raider Stadium on the campus of Alpharetta High School played host to Southeastern lacrosse conference action Friday night. As the Owls were on hand to face a SELC tournament opening round match up with #25 Palm Beach Atlantic. The game featured weather delays, lots of penalties, and some highlight reel goals as KSU ran away with a 13-8 win. The Owls took an early 2-1 lead in the quarter final game before a lightning delay stopped play for an hour. After the break, the Owls put up four more to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. The third quarter saw the Sailfish outscore the Owls 5-3, as penalties and sloppiness characterized the Owls play in the third. After PBA pulled within two; the Owls ended a long scoring drought with four straight to put the game out of reach. Syracuse native Brad Jones was back to his usual ways on Friday night recording 3 goals and 3 assists. Brad has been plagued with a hamstring injury over the past month, but showed no sign on this evening frustrating defensemen with his cutting and stick skills. The Owls will now face the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Northview High School. The upstart Eagles defeated TWC in their first round matchup 8-7. This will be the first matchup between these two schools with the winner earning a spot in the SELC championship game on Sunday. KSU Notes:The owls have now won a first round game in each of the past three SELC Tournaments. KSU comes into the game on a six game win streak. Freshman Tyler Mathews has 16 points in the last 5 games. GAME RECAP

Game ReviewJohns Creek, GA – Kennesaw State is back in the SELC Championship game after taking down the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles in the SELC DII semifinals. Winning 10-7, the Owls now face #17 Elon University on Sunday. After watching Elon hold on against Liberty, the Owls took the field for a scorching afternoon matchup as temperatures reached the upper 80’s. The Owls again cruised out to a 6-2 lead similar to the game against PBA the night before. Defensively, the Owls played steady and stingy in front of the net preventing many close looks by FGCU. Senior Goalie Andrew Flash Flood had 14 saves and defenseman Cole McMeen had a timely interception on a fast break in the fourth to help preserve the W. Freshman Tyler Mathews’ scoring streaked ended on Saturday, but plenty of other players stepped up to fill in the void. Attackman Scott Dockery scored two goals for KSU including a SportsCenter Top 10 goal in front of the net, catching it one handed and burying it over the goalies head. The Owls will be competing in the second SELC Championship game in school history. On the road to the championship, the Owls took out the top two seeds from the SELC southeast division. A win on Sunday guarantees a spot in the MCLA Tournament in Greenville, SC. The Owls have never beaten the Phoenix in their three attempts, which includes a 12-10 loss in the 2010 SELC Championship Game. The Championship Game will start at noon at Northview High School in Johns Creek, GA. All fans are encouraged to come out and support the Owls. Photos

Game ReviewThe KSU lacrosse team fell three goals short of securing a conference title on Sunday, falling to Elon University 9-6 in the SELC Final. The loss most likely concludes the season for the Owls with an at-large bid to the MCLA tournament unlikely. The game marked the second time in three years that these two teams have met in the SELC Championship game. Unfortunately, while the players have changed, the result was the same. The 2010 version of the matchup resulted in a 12-10 win for the Phoenix. In this years game rendition, the Owls came out fired up and took an early lead, but the Phoenix controlled play between the restraining boxes and eventually pulled ahead and never relinquished the lead. The game will most likely end up being the last time that three members of the team ever don the black and gold as the program said good bye to seniors Andrew Congleton, Andrew Flood, and Roary Keown. In the Championship game, senior Andrew Flood had a career high 24 saves for KSU with a 75% save percentage, while Andrew Congleton scored two goals in the losing effort. The three seniors received the second place trophy on behalf of the team. Photos
