Saturday’s SELC semifinal games were filled with great lacrosse and dramatic weather, which halted two of the day’s six games.
The skies cleared and the sun shined brightly Sunday for the SELC Division I and II championships at Northview High School. Prior to the faceoff, Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker read the State of Georgia Proclamation signed by Governor Sonny Perdue, making April 24 “Georgia Lacrosse Day.”
Division II Elon College, the No. 2 tournament seed, was appearing in its third straight title game under the leadership of coach Steve Bailey. First-time title game participant Kennesaw State University, coached by Ken Byers, had the home crowd support from the Georgia crowd of over 1,000 fans.
The first quarter saw Elon jump out to a 6-1 lead. KSU stormed back and got the hometown crowd into the game by scoring five goals and making the contest a one-goal game at the half with Elon ahead, 7-6.
The third quarter saw the Elon jump back on top and take an 11-8 lead into the fourth quarter. Elon’s last goal of the game came with 9:11 left in the fourth as the Phoenix took the 12-9 lead. KSU scored at 7:53 to get within two goals and that was it for the scoring in the game. Elon College took home their second SELC Division II championship in three years and will receive an automatic qualifier bid to the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association National Tournament in Denver May 11-15.
